A Fitting End to Our Last School Music Program Ever

This week was definitely a time of lasts for Cameron and our entire family.  He took his last ever AP exam and went to the orthodontist for the final time as well.  Doug and I also saw the last of the Heinisch senior banners hung.  We weren't really too sad to say goodbye to these milestones, especially the AP exams.

The one last this week that was a little more bittersweet occurred tonight when Cameron played in his last music program ever.  It wasn't just the accumulation of his eight years of playing the oboe, but the end of twenty-five years of music programs starting with Brett's first preschool program in 1998.  We had watched Meg play the clarinet and the piano in several spring arts festival at Milford.  We had enjoyed countless choir programs of all four of them throughout their elementary days highlighted by Cal's maraca playing in Feliz Navidad.  Cameron had even learned to play the handbells which we enjoyed listening to during his time in middle school.  Tonight's performance was just as fun as any that I could remember.  The jazz band started the evening playing one of Doug's favorite songs - Take Five.  The concert band finished the night with Aaron recognizing each one of the seniors with a short speech.  We really enjoyed his words about Cameron as we knew that they had developed a close relationship over the years.

My favorite part of the night happened at the end of the performance, however.  Aaron announced that they would end the concert with the song "Rakes of Mallow."   He said that it was played at a lot of Notre Dame home football games, but I had never heard of it or so I thought.  As soon as the band started playing, however, I turned to Doug in disbelief.  Rakes of Mallow was featured in a key scene of one of our all time favorite movies - The Quiet Man.  As the band finished, I realized that this song was the absolute perfect way to end the Heinisch family's involvement in school music programs.
