When Phil moved to Ocala, the first thing that he told me that he wanted to try was Spurrier's Gridiron Grille in Gainesville. I had seen billboards for the restaurant, but wasn't quite sure why he was so interested in it. I knew that Steve Spurrier was a long time coach of the University of Florida, but after doing some research I realized that he was more than that. He was one of only three players to win the Heisman Trophy at U of F. Thirty years later, he then coached the Gators to a National Championship in 1996 making him the first Heisman winner to coach another Heisman winner.
Doug and Phil both enjoyed going to the famed coach's gridiron grille tonight. They checked out the gift shop that had Spurrier's beer and coffee for sale. They also got to see the wall of visors that Spurrier infamously wore during his coaching years. Doug and Phil called on their way back to Ocala to let me know that they really enjoyed the Steve Spurrier atmosphere as well as their burgers and beers. They were definitely ready to go back again when Meg, Cameron and I visited Ocala in June. Cameron was a little bummed to hear that they didn't buy a visor for Phil and Meg thought that they were the nerdiest two people that she had ever met, but otherwise, it was a successful visit and I was very glad that they got to go.
