Meg was relieved to finally take her first round of the CPA this morning. She had decided several weeks ago that she wouldn't worry about passing it this time, but would look at this first exam as a good learning experience. Meg felt that she always did better on the second test in a class than the first one as she knew what to expect. Thus, she studied for the test this summer, but didn't go overboard learning the material.
I wasn't surprised when Meg called afterward to tell me that she knew that she didn't pass the test. She wasn't disappointed. She was just glad that it was over with for the next few months. I knew from my experience in listening to Cal that if she was positive that she didn't pass it, than it was a really good chance that she didn't. Therefore, I didn't spend a lot of time trying to convince her that she did better on it than she thought that she did. Instead we talked about her plans for the next text and what she learned from this one. I also told her not to compare herself with Cal who passed three of the first four on the first try or to her Dad who passed them all together on one try. There are plenty of people who never pass the CPA. It is not a contest, just a goal to strive for while she's working at Plante Moran.
