While Cam was at the freshmen retreat the first week of school, his friend Sam had to leave for a family emergency. His father had been in a bicycle accident while training for a upcoming triathlon. As we didn't hear much through that weekend, we were all hopeful that "no news, was good news." Unfortunately, that was not the case and three weeks after his accident he was taken off of life support and died shortly afterward.
Meg, Cam, Doug and I wee extremely sad to hear the news. Dereck was one of the first parents who reached out to us when Cameron started at Bethany four years ago. He was a smiling face at all of the Bethany events. He was friendly and easy to talk to whether about his family, our family or his life as a big animal veterinarian. Even my mother remembered exactly who he was when I first told her about the accident. Tragedy can happen at anytime, anywhere. Hopefully, this will be the last of it for the Bethany community for quite some time.
