A Change in Appearance

Cameron had talked all summer about getting his ears pierced.  Several of his friends had done it and he thought that he would like the new look as well.  When he first brought it up, we told him that we were okay with it as long as he had Amanda pierce them and he committed to keeping the piercings limited to his ears.  We also said that we were absolutely against gages as long as he was living with us.  He thought that those were fair requests and decided to table the issue until he got his hair trimmed again.

Today was his "before school" hair appointment with Amanda.  Before he left he said that he was seriously considering the ear piercing.  I told him that I did not have an opinion one way or another, but wanted him to know that he would have to be committed to caring for them, turning them three times a day and putting triple antibiotic cream on them.  He would also need to leave them in for six weeks before changing them and would have to sleep with them in just as Meg had.  He said that he was good with those requirements.

I then brought up one more negative for him to consider - the fact that Cal would never let him live it down.  He laughed at that, said that it was a valid point and that he'd think about it on the fifteen minute drive to North Webster.  None of us were surprised when he came home with not only a haircut, but both ears pierced as well.  He was proud of his new look and both Meg and I liked it as well.  It definitely wasn't something that I thought any of the Heinisch men would chose, but Doug and I were never really worried about it either.  We realized long ago that getting ones ears pierced was a pretty tame piece of self expression.
