4th Place - A Heinisch Tradition

Today was the moment that Cameron had been waiting for all golf season - sectionals.  He left this morning feeling confident.  He had been playing very well and was hitting the ball even better.  We knew that he had a shot at making it to regionals.  Our biggest worry was the difficulty of Meadowvalley.  It had been set up virtually impossible for the boys to play.  We reminded Cameron not to get down if his score on the back nine (his first nine) was a little higher than he thought it should be as last year 84 was the top score to make it out of sectionals.

Cameron played extremely well today.  It was a lot of fun to watch.  He hit his irons great and put himself into position to score.  In the end, however, he finished just as Cal had several times before in the dreaded fourth place position.  One challenging hole where Cameron had to wait a long time while a coach was taken off the course after being struck in the head with a golf ball left him with a nine.  His score for the round was an 84 which put him two strokes out of a regional birth.

Cameron filled us in on more of the details later in the day.  If Goshen would not have finished in the third place team position, Cameron would have earned a position at regionals.  Or if the Northwood boy who shot an 82 would have had his ball land an inch further into the out of bounds area, Cameron would have taken his spot as third.  Even with this news, we were not disappointed at all.  Cameron had finished an impressive ninth out of sixty boys and most importantly felt very good about his play today.

The team celebrated their own ninth place finish at the Shenk's lake home this afternoon playing yard games and eating dinner together.  It had been a wonderful 24 hours for Cameron with golf as he not only scored well today, but also won MVP on the Bruins team.  What a wonderful way to end a fun season.
