Tonight was the end to the JV tennis season. As the three of us drove back from Cameron's victory at Fairfield, we had time to reflect on his first high school sports experience. As neither Cal nor Meg played on the JV tennis teams we weren't sure what to expect when the season started. We didn't know what the competition would be like or how he fit in on such a large team. As there were only two freshmen on Bethany's roster we didn't know what that would mean as well.
In the end we were all thrilled with Cam's experience. He had not only grown in skill on the tennis court, but most importantly in his mental game as well. He had struggled at first in this aspect, but by the end of the season Cam was able to focus and stay confident even when he lost a tough point or was down a break. This growth helped him to improve from number two JV singles to the top spot. It also helped him to close out opponents and win challenging matches. He finished the season 9-7 overall with a 5-2 record on the number one JV court.
Although it was a lot of fun watching him play, the best part of the season was witnessing the team's support of one another. From their "Let's Go" rally cries to their bandana wearing hairdos, the boys were all vested in their team and teammates. There was no division between varsity and junior varsity. Each member was valued for his skills and encouraged to succeed. As a parent I couldn't have asked for a better experience than that.
