Back on the Court

Cam was back on the court tonight after a weekend off.  He had texted me this afternoon to let me know that he would be playing #1 JV singles in this evening's match.  I was happy for him.  Cam had been working hard these past few weeks, and it was nice that his effort was being rewarded.  It was a tough match to be slotted in the #1 spot, but Cam said that he was up for the challenge.  His Westview opponent had played #3 singles on the varsity squad last year.  Knowing this helped Cam to focus on his game and not worry about the score of the match.  Even though he lost 8-1, Cameron played as well as we had seen him this season.  Almost all of the games went to deuce, he scored several nice winners, he had a plan when he came to the net and he improved his service game.   He was proud of himself for playing well and instantly started talking about what he wanted to work on next.

Westview was not only challenging for Cameron, but for the team as a whole.  There were several close matches, but in the end the Bruins lost 0-5 on Varsity and 3-5 JV.  The boys and their coaches felt great about the match and Doug was happy to serve them all pizza afterward.  Overall, tonight was my favorite match of the season.  It was the perfect reminder of how sports should be in high school and it was incredibly nice to be part of such a positive program.
