Sometimes the Game is as Good as the Tailgate

Doug was up at 4 a.m this morning to make brats for today's tailgate.  He didn't really want to get up that early, but we both knew that he had to be at the grass lots by 7 a.m. if he wanted a good tailgate spot.  I was on the fence yesterday about whether I would go with him at 6:45 or would wait and head over later with Brett, Cameron and Alina.  Once Parce said that he and Jenny's family were going to meet Doug and drive in together, I decided that I would be part of the early group.

We met Parce and Jenny at the old Yogi's.  The building had been abandoned since Cameron was a toddler. so we were surprised to see that the infamous restaurant had finally been torn down.   The grass lots did not open until 7 a.m. or so we thought.  We got in line before then and were pleased that they let us in early.  We weren't the first ones to arrive as there were already two rows of tailgaters parked.   Even so, we definitely got a prime spot by arriving early.  Parce and Jenny parked in the two spots next to us and soon we had everything set up for a nice tailgate.

While we waited for the others to arrive, we spent the morning getting to know Jenny's family better and to catch up with Parce.  Cal was the first of our children to arrive.  He had driven down this morning from Indy.  There were about 20 members in his tailgate group, but he was the only one who came over to visit.  He stayed for quite awhile talking with Doug, Brett, Cameron, Parce and I.  It was a lot of fun having all of the boys together and listening to their conversations.

It ended up being a beautiful day, so Brett decided to take a long walk when we headed into the football game.  Alina wasn't a huge fan of the sport, but was up for trying the first half.  She must have brought the Hoosiers luck as they were up 17-10 when half time started.  Since she and Cameron were leaving to check out Kirkwood and take a walking tour of campus, Doug and I decided to return to the tailgate.  We first stopped by Cal's and visited with him and his friends for awhile.  Jayce was there too and we had fun talking with everyone.  We spent the third quarter and most of the fourth at the tailgate.  Jenny and her boyfriend were there as well.  Parce took Gabby back into the game before the fourth quarter started.

Doug and I headed out when IU was still in the lead.  We listened to the end of the game on the way to Brett's.  IU had lost some close ones against several tough teams this year.  We assumed that this game would be the same.  Thus, we were completely surprised when they held on to beat Wisconsin.  Brett was home when we arrived.  He had walked all the way uptown from the stadium and then out to Kroger.  We couldn't believe it.

We spent the next couple of hours resting before picking Cameron and Alina up on campus.  We chose Bucceto's for dinner.  They were busy, but we knew that Kirkwood would be a lot more crowded.  Dinner arrived quicker than we figured and everyone enjoyed their Italian meal.  Once we were back at Brett's, Alina and Cameron taught us a new board game called "Wavelength."  I wasn't great at it, but it was a lot of fun and we all enjoyed playing.  Afterward, Cameron picked the black and white version of Invasions of the Body Snatcher for everyone to watch.  I tried to stay awake, but the day finally caught up with me.
