For the past week all of the news that we have heard about from Florida has been the impending storm ironically named Hurricane Elsa. The high winds and changing path were enough to keep it in the headlines, but the fact that the hurricane was named after a popular Disney princess made for a lot of tweets, memes and social media posts as well.
The storm did provide the intensity that was originally projected, but it did do enough to cause water surges in the Florida Keys and along the Gulf of Mexico. Thankfully, no major damage was reported, but the hurricane did cause flights to be delayed and cancelled throughout the US. Fortunately, ours early evening flight to Orlando today was not one affected, but many were cancelled this morning and yesterday afternoon. I was happy that the weather did not affect our flight, but assumed that it would cause turbulent flight conditions. In the end I had braced myself for no reason. It was actually one of the easiest and quickest flights that we have ever had to Florida. In fact I barely finished watching the inflight movie, Nomadland, before we landed.
It was still a little chaotic getting our luggage. The flight was completely full, so that took a little time. Thankfully, our rental car was ready on time and we were soon on the way to one of Orlando's newest restaurants, Portillo's. We enjoyed our usual, a chili, cheese dog for me and an Italian beef for Doug, before making the drive to Ocala. The irony of flying all of the way to Florida to go to one of Chicago's best eateries kept us talking all the way to the hotel.
