With Grandpa winning the March Madness pool after UConn's national championship run, we were all ready for a chance to win our money back. The Master's proved to be the perfect place to try. While we were traveling home from Ohio, I sent out a reminder on Tuesday for everyone to pick a winner - $5 entry just like the basketball tournament. The first people that I heard back from was Grandpa and Grandma. Grandma's pick was a good one - Jordan Spieth. As soon as Cameron and I looked at Grandpa's text, we started to laugh immediately. He had chosen Roy McElroy, a little know golfer that none of us had heard of before this year's tournament. We realized that he meant Rory Mcilroy, but couldn't stop giving him a hard time about it over the next two days.
By this morning everyone had made their choices - Jon Rahm for Doug, Scottie Scheffler for Brett as he hoped to cash in on him again this year, Dustin Johnson for Cal, Meg chose Collin Morikawa, Cameron picked Max Homa and I took Will Zalatoris. Cameron and I spent most of this afternoon sitting by the fireplace watching the major. We were both glad to see Tiger Woods playing, even though we knew that he wouldn't have much of a chance of winning. By the time Rory teed off in the mid afternoon, we had found out that Willy Z had to withdraw due to an injury. Since he hadn't started his round, Cameron let me chose another player that also hadn't teed off. Tony Finau seemed like a good choice and I changed my allegiance to him.
By the end of day Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Brooks Koepka were all tied at -7 under. That looked good for Doug, but Cameron and I were sure that a few other players would make a run on day 2. Even if Finau didn't win, I was happy to have another Heinisch family pool started. It gave us something to keep in touch about and made the cooler April days seem a lot more fun.
