Opening Day

It was a beautiful night for the first golf match of the year.  Grandma, Grandpa and I enjoyed following Cameron as he attempted to tackle Meadowvalley and two highly intense golf opponents.  Cameron hit the ball well and took advantage of some nice chips that helped save him par on several holes.  A ball in the water, a three putt, and a missed drive were the difference between a 43 and a 40.  Cameron was a little disappointed about the 43, but overall was pleased with his game tonight.  Going into the match, he knew that Bethany had no chance of beating Northridge who shot an unbelievable 146 as a team or Fairfield with their score of 171, but he had hoped for a 41.

I listened to Cameron talk and agreed that a 40 or 41 would have sounded a lot better, but 43 was respectable on a challenging course with the tees back.  I told him that two things stood out to me tonight.  One, he competed well and didn't let a double bogey early ruin his round.  Number two, (and the best part), he had more people in his gallery than any on the opposing teams even though it was their home course.  That was a testament to his character and meant more to me than any score that he could have shot.  The next match should be a little less intimidating, but no matter what Cameron shoots, I'll just enjoy these last few moments of high school with him and his friends.
