Last Tuesday we were absolutely shocked to find out that a well-known Indiana congresswoman was killed in a car accident. Jackie Walorski had been involved in local, state and national politics for as long as I could remember. She was well liked and had received the honor of being a member of the Ways and Means committee in Washington DC.
Making the accident even more upsetting was the fact that it happened on State Road 19 just north of Nappanee. It was a road that we had all traveled frequently and one that none of us really liked. When I heard the news, I instantly thought of the time that Doug and I had to pull completely off the road as a car was driving in the wrong lane coming straight at us. For the next few days after the Walorski accident I was nervous to drive and hated it when Doug or Cameron headed north.
As the news covers her funeral this week, talk will soon turn to a replacement for Jackie in Congress. Brett's friend, Curt Nisley, has been one talked about as has her husband. No matter who it is, they will have big shoes to fill. Jackie Walorski was an important part of the Indiana political scene and will be greatly missed.
