Cal called in January to see if it would work for him to visit for a week in March. We readily said yes and marked the dates on our calendar. Although he was excited for a week in the sun, for a while he wasn't sure that he would be able to make it. The pain and ringing in his ear had gotten bad enough that he didn't think that he would be able to fly. Thankfully, the ENT gave him something to clear it up and he arrived yesterday afternoon pain free. We were both excited to see him and spent the trip home catching up on everything that had been going on in his life these past two months. We were pleased to hear that Cal was doing well and enjoyed listening to his thoughts on the recent movies that he had been watching, Maggie's birthday weekend and the podcasts that he had been listening to while he was working. Doug and Cal also spent time talking about Cal's work schedule and his last month of busy season.
Cal went for a walk as soon as he got home last night while Doug made turkey chili for dinner. I cut his hair once he got back. It was longer than usual, but nothing like it was when he was in high school. Afterward, the three of us watched the Oscars together. Doug and I had only seen two of the nominated movies but had heard a lot about them from Cal and were excited to watch them with him. Neither of the two movies that we saw won anything and Cal finished second in the Doyle family Oscar pool, but we loved Conan O'Brien as the host, Jon Lithgow's "disappointing" face and Mick Jagger as a presenter making the night a success.
Even though today was a quiet one as Cal worked from home, I truly enjoyed having him here. Just like when we lived in Syracuse, every time he came out of his work room, I talked his ear off. I was also here when he needed something to eat and to watch Twilight Zone episodes with him when he was doing busy work. It was what I missed most when we moved, and I was extremely thankful to have him here.
Doug made turkey sausage, chicken brats and potatoes for dinner tonight when he got home. All were delicious and gave us another night to just relax at home enjoying each Cal's company. Cal suggested Alfred Hitchcock Presents for our viewing pleasure. Doug hadn't seen very many of them and I had loved the show as a child, so it was a perfect way to end the evening.
