An Idea

For the past several years Cameron has attended Bright Time Camps at Bethany Christian Schools.  He has also played in several chess tournaments at their facility and has recently been attending their Friday night "Get to Know You" groups for prospective students.  Thus, we thought when we received an invitation to attend their Open House today we might as well check it out.

Meg went along with us on the visit as an objective student observer.  Meg really wants to attend WHS next year to see what high school at Wawasee is all about.  I asked her, however, to look for pros and cons as if she was going to attend Bethany next year.  We started off meeting the principal in the library as well as the admissions staff and several of the teachers.  Cam and Meg both noticed how clean the school was and how attentive the adults were.  Meg asked about their honors class and the principal took time to explain their philosophy with her.  We all listened intently and followed up with several more questions.

Once Meg and Doug left for soccer Cam asked the admissions director to take us on a tour of the school.  He remarked several times on what he liked and what he noticed as we walked the corridors.  Cam was definitely interested in hearing about their drama program and their chess club.  He even pointed out his name on the final tournament standing posted outside the gym wall from his chess victory a week ago.

As we walked out of the school Cam asked me, "Why were we there?"  I asked him his thoughts and he said that he believed that it was because he might go to Bethany next year.  I then asked him if he was interested in trying Bethany Christian for a year.  He immediately said, "Yes.  Can I go after Christmas?"
I know that we can't pull off a move like that as quickly as he may want, but it definitely has given us something to think about for 5th grade.  Maybe a year of private school to see what it is all about wouldn't be such a bad idea.  It definitely was a great first impression.
