One Battle After Another

Doug and I have gone to the theater more this last year than we had in the past ten years.  It isn't because the movies are better.  In fact, many weekends we can't find anything to watch as it seems that most recent movies are either horror films or superhero movies, neither of which fit a genre that we are interested in.  The biggest reason that we have more time to go to the movies is because we have more time, especially on the weekends.  Without youth sports on our calendar, we have more free Saturday afternoons than we have in decades.

This weekend, we did find a movie that caught our eye.  Leonardo DiCaprio was starring in an action film that not only looked good, but got great reviews especially from Cal.  Today we decided to take advantage of IU's bye week and see the early Oscar contender.  It was a long movie, almost three hours, but definitely was as good as the reviews.  The first thirty minutes were uncomfortable, but important to setting up the rest of the film. Thankfully, Cal had warned me that I wouldn't enjoy that part, so I knew to watch the majority of it with my eyes closed.  I was excited going into it that Sean Penn had a key supporting role as he is one of my favorite actors.  In the end, I hated his character so much, I instead turned my attention to Benicio Del Toro's role.  I normally do not really care for him as an actor, but he was fantastic today and stood out in every scene he was in.  Overall, the movie lived up to the hype, and we had so much fun with it that tonight we turned on Usual Suspects another great Del Toro movie.
