For the past few months Meg had been reading a book about sustainability. She had learned a lot and had shared some of the tips that she had found the most interesting. Meg was impressed with how many of those suggestions she had already learned from me and my family. I was very glad to hear that and proud that she recognized that I never dumped a partially drank water bottle down the sink but always used it to water my plants.
Reduce, reuse and recycle had been a theme in my family for as long as I could remember. Everyone washed out their plastic containers to reuse them. My grandfather and I spent hours smashing aluminum cans to take to the recycling center. We used hand-me-downs, went to garage sales and kept the parts of non-working items so that they could be used for other DIY projects. My family grew gardens and canned their own fruits and vegetables. No one ever really talked about recycling or being sustainable. It was just a way of life, especially for those living in rural areas or who were looking to save money. I was glad that Meg recognized this as an important life skill, and thankful that we could contribute to her reducing her own carbon footprint.
