A New Job

All of Meg's hard work looking for a job finally paid off as she was offered a position as a bookkeeper at a Catholic church inside the Orlando Diocese.  When she was first called about the job, she declined the offer.  She was afraid that she didn't have the skills to take the position as she would be head of finance for the church and have to attend monthly finance meetings.  It also required her to do accounting work that she had no hands-on experience with.  Meg was also concerned about the hours as the job description called for thirty-five hours a week, and she was wanting something closer to twenty-five to thirty.  Meg also had an interview with a tax company that she wanted to pursue since she had used their accounting software in the past, and it had less of a commitment outside of tax season.

Meg felt very good about her decision to turn down the offer until the priest called her back and asked her to reconsider.  He had interviewed three candidates and was really impressed with Meg and thought she was a good fit for the position.  The priest told her that the job would not be the thirty-five hours that was advertised as he didn't think that he would find anyone if he posted less.  His current bookkeeper only worked twenty-five.  He had also arranged for that bookkeeper to stay and train Meg, so she would have help in the beginning.  She said that she would seriously think about it over the weekend and get back to him.

After talking to the priest, Meg thought a lot about the pros and cons of taking the position at the church and weighing against a seasonal tax job.  She asked for Nick and my input.  I supported whatever she decided but did suggest that the priest calling back might be a sign that she should take the position at the church.  I knew she could do the job so that wasn't a concern.  I was actually more worried about Meg working in a public accounting environment again.  It was a lot of stress, and those companies were prone to hiring employees that were extremely competitive and sometimes catty.  Nick pointed out to her that when she was in Chicago, she talked a lot about getting a job at a church, so he believed that she should try it.  The worst thing that could happen was that she hated it, quit and looked for another job.  On Monday, Meg called to tell me that she had taken the position.  I was very glad to hear that and knew that she wouldn't regret it.
