Doug and Cal both had their first matches of the season. Luckily, they were both at home. We could watch Cal play while Doug's team was on the field. Manchester was delayed getting to the tennis match, so we watched almost the entire first half of soccer before Cal started.
I was very nervous for Doug. I know that he has worked hard this summer to get his team prepared. They had not scored a varsity goal since last August, but that all changed in the first five minutes of the game. Doug's forwards had a break away and put the ball into the back of the net. The crowd erupted and the vuvuzela was sounded. I was so happy for Doug that I almost cheered out loud at the tennis match. The girls played well for their first game and went on to win 3-1. What a relief that was for them and Doug. Memories of last season can already be erased. They took pictures after the game and dumped a bucket of water on the assistant coach. The JV did well too ending in a 1-1 tie.
Cal played impressive in his first match at number one singles. I was so very proud of him. He has improved a lot this summer and his hard work shows. He did lose 6-3 and 6-2, but once he becomes consistent on his first serve it will be a challenge for others to beat him.
