Jaws, The 50th Anniversary

Every year for as long as I can remember, our family has watched the movie Jaws during the 4th of July weekend.  Since buying the projector five years ago, we have tried to enjoy the film outside every summer. Even on rainy holiday weekends, we have brought the projector in for the big screen movie theater feel.

There was a bigger hype for this year's viewing of Jaws as the movie celebrated its 50th anniversary.  Realizing that Jaws had been a part of fifty summers of my life was unbelievable.  I still remember the fear that I had the first time that I saw the movie in theaters.  I was positive that there were sharks in every body of water imaginable.  Even taking a bath seemed unsafe to me.  I found out that I wasn't alone in this fear several weeks ago when Doug and I were watching the 50th anniversary special.  Director Jordan Peele remembered the exact same feeling the first time he saw the movie.

Doug and I had as much fun watching this year's viewing as we had in the past.  The mayor was still incompetent, Sheriff Brody was still the hero, the music still brought fear, and the shark attacks were still some of the scariest scenes that I had ever seen.  I don't know if all of our family watched Jaws this weekend, but Cal definitely did.  He texted us to let us know that they were going to watch it at Maggie's lake house even though she hadn't quite adopted our love of the movie as she replied to Cal's enthusiasm with, "Didn't we watch Jaws last year?"  The obvious answer to that question, was "yes, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before . . ."
