On Saturday, Cal and Grandpa Cutes played in the Big Cup together at Maxwelton. They were both extremely excited about it as they loved the annual tournament. I could completely understand how they felt about the tournament as I remembered it being my favorite golf weekend of the year. Scores were usually lower than in normal tournaments as it was easier to sink long putts with the format's oversized holes even with the challenging pin placements.
I thought about the two of them throughout the day. I hoped that they would do well but knew that they would meet fierce competition. Doug and my dad had finished second one year, and it would be great if they could equal that, but most of all I just wanted them to have fun. I told my mom that I wished that I was there as I could have driven her around the golf course to catch them in action.
When the phone rang and I saw Cal's number, I hoped that it was good news with maybe a podium finish. I couldn't believe it when he said that he and Grandpa had actually won. They had both played extremely well with Cal having one of the best putting days of his life. He told me that he thought he was going to have a hole-in-one on thirteen missing it by inches and that Grandpa was the only one who bet on their team. Thus, the $80 that they each won would probably turn in to quite a bit more. Cal's favorite part was that they had tied his old vice principal at the end of eighteen which sent the scoring to a backup system. They remained tied from eighteen all the way to eight where Cal's birdie put their team on top. It was extremely exciting to listen to, and I was absolutely thrilled that they had won. Cal put it as one of his top golf memories of all time. I couldn't blame him for that.
